Beatriz Morales at Edith Farnsworth House
by Mies van der Rohe
October 24, 2024
We are very proud to present CAPISAYO, the first Chicago solo exhibition by Mexican artist Beatriz Morales. Working in and with van der Rohe’s iconic building, Morales presents textile and fifiber art works, some floating freely, some on canvases, both in the house itself as well as in the adjacent visitor center Gallery. The exhibition is curated by Esenija Bannan.
Between the poles of the historical and the contemporary, traditional craft and adventurous aesthetics, Mexican artist Beatriz Morales weaves a transformative narrative of human design in harmony with architecture and nature.
In a reflection of the importance of the iconic Edith Farnsworth House, its history, the natural landscape that surrounds it and also the many flooding events since construction, the exhibition Capisayo is an artistic homage, an expression of goodwill and symbolic gesture of protection. Floating gently in the interior of the Farnsworth House, the colorful piece has two complementary sides: The front, seen from the outside, is a flowing cascade of agave fiber, like a large, textured three dimensional brush stroke of soft material. The reverse side, viewed from the inside of the house, reveals an intricate, symmetrical pattern of knots in the style of a pre-Hispanic Mexican Capisayo.
